Rap-Rock Pioneer Shifty Shellshock Dead at 49.
The music world mourns Seth Binzer, better known as Shifty Shellshock, frontman of Crazy Town. Binzer died at his Los Angeles home on June 24, 2024, at 49. Cause of death remains unknown.
Binzer’s legacy rides on Crazy Town’s megahit “Butterfly.” Released in late 1999, the song (sampling Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty”) exploded in 2000. The video, starring Binzer’s then-girlfriend Cynthia, rocketed the song to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Surprisingly, “Butterfly” wasn’t planned as the lead single for Crazy Town’s debut album, “The Gift of Game.” But the song’s infectious groove, Binzer’s rapping, and the band’s unique rap-rock blend resonated with audiences. “Butterfly” became an early 2000s anthem, dominating radio and MTV, securing Crazy Town’s place in music history.
Despite “Butterfly’s” success, Crazy Town struggled to repeat it. The band faced internal conflicts, and Binzer battled substance abuse, a struggle he openly discussed.
